In 1994 16-year-old Emmanuel Taban fled war-torn Sudan after he had been tortured by government forces who accused him of spying for the rebels. Over the next 18 months he travelled - mostly by bus and on foot - from Eritrea, via Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, to Johannesburg.

In South Africa he managed to complete his schooling and qualify as a doctor, eventually specialising in pulmonology. A pulmonologist at Mediclinic Midstream, he has pioneered the use of therapeutic bronchoscopies in the treatment of hypoxaemic COVID-19 patients.
