Printed on handmade paper by T.J.Cobden-
Sanderson and Emery Walker with initial letters designed by Edward
Johnson. Roderick Cave in his book THE PRIVATE PRESS" (1983) says:
books printed by The Doves Press were "completely without ornament or
illustration, they depended for their beauty almost entirely on the
clarity of the type, the excellence of the layout, and the perfection
of the presswork, They were, in fact, the ruthlessly simple
application of Cobden-Sanderson's dictum that "the whole duty of
typography....is to communicate, without loss by the way, the thought
or image intended to be communicated by the author...." The
simplicity of the Doves pages was of course deceptive. Johnson's
masterly calligraphic initials, like the unforgettable opening to
Genesis, in the Bible (1903-1905) were a perfect example of how to
marry calligraphy and typography, and J.H.Mason's setting was full of
those almost invisible refinements that only another printer can
recognize...".
